| I don't know where to begin with my negative experience with this professor at Chapman University. Director Stephen Coker is typically a wonderful man, socially and professionally, to the choir. On the other hand, he does weed out people who he deems incompetent for choir; sometimes based not on real incompetency, but personal disfavor of the student's style. There have been regular times his opinion of their said-incompetency is in fact influenced by completely impertinent factors, as different style in social behavior; or the fact that a person's speech is "choppy" and "awkward-sounding"; emphasizing that other students would distance themselves from people with that presence. Have been known to insult students, causing at least somewhat of a decline in their performance in his choir. His having expected the worst out of students, who had dealt with his intolerance, actually brought out the worst in them; creating them into the very figures of whom he scorns in the first place. Two students can do very similar things but result in completely different responses coming from Stephen Coker; depending on his frivolous silent politics with those students. Furthermore, has a way of mentally manipulating those students of his who don't fall on his bad side: by causing them to regard complainers of him as not wanting to own responsibility for said-complainers' poor performance in his choir. As a victim of his said-treatment, I often felt on edge and excess, unnecessary stress during my work at Chapman University; having not learned a single thing from him about conducting nor choral music; whilst passing his class. |
