1. This professor does not engage his students during a live (synchronous) lecture or on the discussion board; consequently, there is a lost opportunity for students to really learn the subject matter. He assumes that students need to only read and regurgitate the material. 2. He assigned a final research paper that requires first hand accounts on events that took place in Russia during the early days of the Soviet Union. He places more importance of memoirs and dairies than academic journals and books. 3. He assigned an additional paper, an overview of a topic, due on the same day as the final paper; who does such a reckless thing? 4. Overall, the class is easy, but the discussion board is useless because without professor engagement it is reduced to students making repetitious posts about the same question. It does not foster debate or discussion; in fact there is none. It's impossible to have a discussion around questions that are essentially fact based questions such as, "How successful were the Bolsheviks in "building socialism" in the 1920s?" What ends up happening is students take the answer straight from the text and respond to one another by simply agreeing with the post. The Professor has never led a discussion on any topic. The bottom line is this course could be learned by simply reading the book; the professor's contribution was insignificant. I would strongly not recommend this course to anyone who seriously desires to learn about Russian history. I learned more from reading journal articles.

Pros: He's very knowledgeable about history. He is very enthusiastic when he speaks. For his tests he doesn't just want the dates, he wants to further know what happened as a result of the situation.
Cons: Reads off slides, and he goes too fast. Hard to take notes sometimes in class.
