That awkward time of year...is it summer or fall?
Every morning I struggle with deciding what to wear. It’s not my normal complaint of “I literally have nothing to wear,” it’s that awkward transition from summer to fall.
It’s as if the weather’s confused. When I check the weather for the day on my phone it gives me a 20-degree range! How am I supposed to plan an outfit around that broad prediction?
The mornings definitely feel like fall in the 50s with cool crisp air, but the afternoon definitely feels like summer heating up to the high 70s with a strong sun. It’s like I need an outfit change mid-day because of the drastic temperature change.
I can be wearing jeans and a t-shirt around 10 a.m. and when 3 p.m. rolls around I’m dripping in sweat and hating myself for putting on jeans in the morning.
To survive this seasonal transition, especially at Maryland where you can walk 20 minutes to class, you need to learn to dress in layers. Layers allow you to stay warm in the cool mornings and still be dressed appropriately for the afternoon when the temperature warms up. Plus, the classrooms are always the opposite of what it’s like outside.
Booties are a key essential during this awkward weather. It’s definitely too late into September to wear flip-flops and sandals, but too early to wear knee high leather boots and don’t even think about slipping on Uggs. It’s the perfect time to rock those combat boots, Docs or any trendy ankle bootie.
An ideal in-between summer and fall outfit is a mix of clothing from summer that is appropriate for fall. Shorts, a shirt, sweater and booties make for an accessible outfit when the seasons change.
