The "Kid" Foods I Still Buy At The Grocery Store

By Megan Weyrauch on July 18, 2013

Articles abound on the internet about the kinds of foods you should stop eating by the time you are (insert age). As I pushed my cart through the aisles of Giant Eagle yesterday, I realized that I disagree with these authors. Though I am in college, I still shamelessly buy the following foods:

Lunchables

Yes, I will continue to “make fun of lunch” regardless of how old I am. Why? Lunchables require an extremely small amount of preparation and eating time. If I want pizza, it takes less than five minutes to prep, cook, and eat the three Lunchable cheese pizzas. If I am feeling nachos for a snack, I can rip off the lid to my Nacho Lunchable and I am ready to delight my taste buds with a chip dipped in cheese or salsa. Do I care that these lunches are made for elementary school kids? No. Why does it matter so much that I still buy these easy meals?  They’re fast, tasty and pretty cheap. That sounds like a done deal to me.

Fruit Snacks

And I’m talking which ever fruit snacks are the cheapest, which usually means some sort of silly shapes. If that means this 21-year-old is taking Phineas and Ferb fruit snacks in her lunch, then so be it. One week it was Charlie Brown and this week was Super Mario (how could you NOT eat this?!). Sure, I could eat the boring, vending machine fruit snacks, but why would I pass up buying a cheap 10-pack box because the fruit snacks are shaped like Spongebob? Big deal! Food is food, no matter who it resembles.

SpaghettiOs

I recall talking to a girl at orientation about how we wanted to have a SpaghettiOs party when we moved into the dorms, so I know that I am not the only person who still consumes this childhood favorite. Why do I still eat SpaghettiOs, you ask? Well, it’s pasta, it comes in a can and it takes about three minutes to make. Sometimes I even go for the SpaghettiOs with meatballs, just to shake things up.

Pizza Rolls

Again with the pizza. Pizza Rolls are advertised for kids and busy moms, but as I love pizza, they appeal to me too. I have consumed these rolls for years—why stop now? As I am sure you can tell, possessing time is a key problem for me, and thus when I can indulge in frozen foods and save myself some time, I will not pass up the opportunity. Pizza Rolls are delicious, and I do not have to be a kid to eat them.

No, I will not give up these “kiddie” foods, because there is no age limit to enjoying food. So for all of you authors out there who say I need to stop eating these kinds of foods before I am twenty-something, please forgive me if I show up at your house with a Lunchable and a can of SpaghettiOs ready to party.
