The Best Shows to Watch on Netflix

By Rubina Kapil on July 17, 2013

I think one of the best monthly expenditures an individual can make is for Netflix. After a one-month free trial, it’s only $7.99 a month for a large variety of television shows and movies. It can be accessed through a phone, television, laptop, iPad, etc. — it doesn’t get much better than that. As a T.V. junkie, I have browsed many shows on Netflix and found myself watching five to six episodes at a time. With free time during summer, Netflix can truly be a lifesaver. If you are someone with Netflix but don’t know what to watch or someone who is thinking of joining the club, I have developed a short list of my favorites.

Sherlock

This 21st century rendition of Sherlock Holmes tells tales of a detective and his partner, Dr. Watson, in modern day London. Given 9.2/10 stars from www.imdb.com, this television show is a refreshing change from the typical comedies or CSI-style shows we see. Watching Sherlock’s mind work in magnificent ways to decipher mysteries on the streets of London, as well as the humor between Sherlock and Dr. Watson, makes each episode worth watching over and over again.

Breaking Bad

This television show has one of the most unique plots I have heard–it revolves around the story of Walter White, a high school chemistry professor who is diagnosed with lung cancer. After this diagnosis and the realization that he needs to provide financial security to his family, he begins to sell crystal meth. Given 9.4/10 stars from www.imdb.com, this television show keeps you on the edge of your seat (or in my case, as close to your laptop screen as possible) for every episode.

How I Met Your Mother

As described on www.imdb.com, “The year is 2030. Ted Mosby is relaying the story of how he met his wife to his daughter and son.” Given 8.5/10 stars by IMDb, this television show is not only one of the funniest I have seen, but it also keeps you watching in hopes of finally meeting the mother. With the ninth and final season expected to begin this fall, this show will help you waste time this summer with nothing but good laughs.

Top Gear

An interesting change from typical television shows with a plot line, Top Gear is a show in which three men–Jeremy, Richard, and James–compare and discuss everything car-related. They often take trips to other countries to examine, test, and compare cars to one another. Interesting and often really funny, this show was given 8.7/10 stars from www.imdb.com and is worth watching regardless of your interest level in cars.

Prison Break

A bit of an older television show (from 2005), Prison Break tells the story of structural engineer Michael Scofield. When a political scandal places Scofield’s older, innocent brother Lincoln Burrows into jail for execution, Scofield plans to place himself in the same jail to help break his brother out. With a total of four seasons to watch, this show is very unique and full of surprises in every scene. Not only this, but this show was given a solid 8.5/10 stars from www.imdb.com.
