Chime For Change Introduced at Concert in England

By Rachel Ethridge on June 29, 2013

A few weeks ago Gucci introduced the world to a new movement called Chime For Change. The goal is to empower girls and women through education, health, and justice. The launch was a historic concert event at the Twickenham Stadium in the United Kingdom featuring fabulous men and women from around the globe. Millions of people watched June 1 as Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Ellie Goulding, John Legend, Florence + The Machine, and many more took to the stage to announce their support for girls everywhere. Watch the video below to learn more about Chime For Change (narrated by Salma Hayek Pinault, Beyonce, and Frida Giannini).

If that’s not inspiring enough and doesn’t make the change in your pockets disappear then watch this video. A video of girls expressing their dreams; dreams that may have never come true if it weren’t for Chime For Change and the many nonprofit organizations they support which will turn many into a reality.

NBC aired a two hour recap of the event since it was not shown live in the United States. I recorded it because I saw the name Beyonce. I had no idea that it was a benefit concert or that I would fall in love with the movement. I waited to watch it without commercials and was stuck on my couch for the entire show. Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds spoke in between singers, Madonna pledged to provide half of the money needed to build a school if viewers raised the other half, and Jay-Z joined Beyonce on stage to sing Crazy in Love. The night was truly magical and if I had known about it in advanced I may have flown across the pond to watch it live.

Chime For Change has teamed up with a new site, Catapult, which houses the many nonprofit organizations that are helping girls and women around the globe. Anyone can search through the website and find a project that they would like to fund. Current projects include fighting cervical cancer, putting girls through college, and ending early marriages. The site provides detailed information about the project and shows how many people support the cause and how much more money needs to be raised.

The movement is organized and headed by a strong company and passionate people. It was important to see male celebrities supporting the cause, showing the world that it’s not just women fighting for women, but that men care about our rights too.

The Chime For Change concert made it known that people don’t have to be celebrities or have loads of money to make a difference. Girls like Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan are making a difference by standing up for what they believe in and by telling their stories. You can make a difference by supporting one of the projects on Catapult’s website, by bringing light to women who have been wronged, by supporting equal rights for women, and by sharing your voice and your opinion to all that will listen.

Our world, especially our country, is making strides to equality everyday. Yesterday we came a step closer to legalizing all marriages. Tomorrow we can hope that it will be women. Equal education, healthcare, and justice will bring our world together and will empower women for eternity.
