The News You're NOT Getting: Everyday Heroes

By Artemis Freeman on May 25, 2013

News with ominous music blares through the speakers. Lights flash, and collapsing bridges, death, and Monsanto span through the screen. A headline reads “17 Children Die in Pakistan School Bus Fire.”

If you pay any kind of attention to the news media or social media, you’ve heard about Benghazi. You’ve heard about Amanda Bynes’ arrest and alleged sexual harassment case with the NYPD. You’ve heard about Google Class, the beginnings of marriage equality and why The Great Gatsby was a terrible movie. You’ve heard exactly what the media has told you; nothing more, nothing less.

You know what the media hasn’t told you?

ABC didn’t have a single headline about Earl Morse, a physician’s assistant in Ohio who helped fly WWII Veterans to see the memorial erected in their honor.

FOX News didn’t cover the story of Talia Castellano, a 13 year old cancer patient, and an honorary Covergirl with her own fashion line.

MSNBC didn’t care about Officer Michael Khor of Oxnard, CA. Officer Khor received a report from the tearful father of Bella Sanchez. Bella ‘gotta  Princess bike from Santa, and somebody stoled it.’ Officer Khor went above the call of duty and not only reported the incident, but went on to buy Bella Sanchez a new princess bicycle. It’s no secret that this world has hate. The world we live in can sometimes be as dark and scary as the media makes it out to be. When we take it upon ourselves to go out and meet real human beings, with real jobs and real families that do amazing things every day, it’s hard to believe that this world is so ridden with fear. In reality, there are far more people looking out for well-being than there are people looking out for the good of their brand new gun.

If you don’t believe me, here’s a challenge: go to your next door neighbor, your roommate, whomever you want to. Ask them this: “What is the most amazing thing you’ve seen someone do this week? What random acts of kindness have you seen?” At first, they’ll look at you like you have sprouts growing from your head; they won’t be used to having to think about the good in people. Then, they’ll stay silent for about three seconds, until they pick the right act of kindness out of the hundred they’ve seen this week to tell you about.

There is more than flashes of light in this day and age. There’s more than death, and collapsing bridges and ominous music. There are heroes among us, and they deserve the news articles, too.
