Memorial Day Movements
With Memorial Day weekend quickly approaching, many of us find ourselves traveling out of town to be with family and friends. Memorial Day weekend is a time to celebrate the beginning of summer and the end to another school year.
Many UC Davis students take the weekend to venture north to Lake Shasta to what is commonly known as Slaughterhouse Island. With nearly every houseboat on the lake rented out by 20-something year-olds for the extended weekend, the lake and island become a constant party. Shasta-goers find friends and even students from other universities who they spend the weekend with. Boatloads of people spend the weekend on the lake enjoying music, BBQ, drinks, and each other’s company. Houseboating at Lake Shasta is a campus wide kick-off to summer.
If houseboating isn’t for you, many groups of college students take road trips for the extended weekend. Some travel to Southern California to visit the sunshine and beaches, whereas others drive cross-country or just into other surrounding states. Another popular destination for those of us in Northern California is beautiful, blue Lake Tahoe. Throughout the weekend, the lake celebrates the beginning of summer with a start to seasonal concerts and community activities. The restaurants and people come alive on the lake. Camping is another popular activity for the long weekend, no matter where your destination. If you’re just staying local this year to relax, get outside and do something.
Wherever you go, whatever you do, use Memorial Day weekend to celebrate your loved ones, your freedom, and our country. Use the weekend to kick back, relax, and enjoy the warm weather and sunshine.
