How to Make Time for Fitness

By Lorraine Jazleene Biteranta on May 20, 2013

We’ve all been there. At some point in our lives, we’ve all had to sit through that “why-fitness-is-important” talk, thinking to ourselves that just maybe, the world might be on to something. For some of us, it comes easy. For others, the commitments of school, work, friends, and family make finding time for anything else difficult. These five tips will make finding time for fitness much easier:

1.       Cut Leisure time in half

Whether or not we realize it, we have a lot more spare time than we think. Whether it be watching your favorite show, surfing the net, or even just drifting into a quick nap, any leisurely activity can be cut in half. If your favorite show is an hour long, only watch half of it and save the next half for later. Limit surfing the net to 15 minutes per session. Set an alarm before you drift asleep. Take the extra thirty minutes, fifteen minutes, or even just ten minutes you saved on leisure, and take a quick jog around the block. Every little bit counts.

2.      Extra Exercise

Again, every little bit counts. Use the stairs instead of the elevators. Park in the back of the parking lot and power walk the extra few feet. If your budget allows, invest in or borrow a bicycle and bike to the store instead of driving. If distance allows, try walking to school. You might be surprised at the sights and sounds you miss while you’re behind the wheel.

3.       Make it a Bonding Experience

Bring your loved ones with you! Having a friend, family member, or spouse supporting your fitness goals by joining you will add fuel to your workout and help to keep you on track. If your loved ones are your “workout buddies,” you will never have to worry about sacrificing time for fitness!

4.       Make a Schedule

Set aside thirty minutes to an hour every day to exercise. Whether that means waking up early, sleeping a little later, or sacrificing your beloved television shows, set a time and stick with it! Results will only show through perseverance and dedication, and adding an exercise routine to your schedule is a great way to make sure you stay on track.

5.        Prioritize

Think about what’s really important. Some priorities are unavoidable: work, school, and quality time with loved ones. Others can be cut out completely with little to no consequences. What made you want to add fitness into your life in the first place? Fitness is about health, happiness and to some, even pride. To achieve the “beach body” we all secretly wish for- having a steady fitness routine must be a priority.

Adding fitness into your hectic life may seem hard at first, but these five tips can help to add fitness into your routine. Following these tips can eliminate the guilt of not finding the time to exercise and keep you healthy and happy – after all, everybody knows the old saying that “if you look good, you feel good.”
