5 Tips on Long-distance Relationship in College

By Weitong Wang on May 16, 2013

Many of my friends broke up with their significant others right before college.

They wanted to avoid long-distance relationships. Some said: “It’s just not doable” or “This is never gonna work if we are not at the same place.” Others said: “I feel insecure with such a long distance” or “There are too many temptations in college; I don’t think he nor I could make through it.”

Actually, a long-distance relationship is not exactly a hard work. Long-distance relationships can be more rewarding than those where you’re glued together to your significant other all the time. As a college student who experienced three years of long-distance relationship, I would like to give some tips on how to maintain a seemingly unworkable long-distance relationship in college.

1. True Love:

Loving and feeling loved is the most important deal-breaker when deciding whether to go on a long-distance relationship. When the long-distance relationship is based on true love, it is more likely to prolong and produce healthy communications. True love to a long-distance relationship is like water to fish, without which the other one cannot last.

2. A strong mind:

A mature, staunch mind is a must to maintain a long-distance relationship. Decisions are easy to make. Following setbacks are not so easy to overcome. A strong mind will keep you two together and help you not feel so miserable when you see other couples go to classes and libraries with their hands held together. You have to learn to do everything without your partner’s help and concern. Focus on your daily tasks. Think of the benefits of being apart from your significant other: you could spend more time studying, developing hobbies, and catching up with friends. Distance makes you independent.

3. An open mind and Trust:

Couples fight. And they get mad usually at some trivial matters. For instance, I used to feel so insecure when my boyfriend, on his campus far far away from mine, was with girls, even when his guy friends were there with him. It was pointless but, in the process of trying to avoid pointless fights, he started lying to me. From that point, every time we fought, it ended up with either I agreed not to be suspicious or he agreed not to lie.

Love may disappear in countless doubts. Any fight has two results: break up or get back together. Many times guys lie because they do not want to fight over pointless matters. Girls, if you let it go and stop trying to control your boyfriend, you will see how wonderful the relationship will be!

4. Save “Alright, let’s break up!” to the last minute:

It is always heartbreaking to say “Let’s break up.” Even when you didn’t mean it, your angry words will hurt your significant other. It is normal to burst out words that hurt others when people get angry. But it should never be the three words, “Let’s break up.” This rule is especially important in a long-distance relationship, where fights often occur on the phone. Take a deep breath and think it through the next time when the phrase buzz in your mouth.

5. Sound communication:

You can’t afford to neglect communication. Thanks to the advanced technology, couples a number of ways to connect to each other. Schedule the time reasonably; it should not be your full time job to connect with him online. In long-distance relationship, it is important that, when you face a problem, you don’t leave it unsolved. Even a tiny issue may burst overtime. Don’t be afraid to admit your own problem and don’t be afraid to point out the significant other’s!
