I was extremely saddened to hear the news recently about Aly Wolff. I didn’t know her personally, but I saw her campaigners across campus in full effect. I probably saw more of it than most because I live near the UW-Oshkosh campus, specifically on Frat Row. I didn’t live in a fraternity house, but most of our neighbors where
fraternities or sororities and the banners displaying #BiebsMeetAly were everywhere. I’m usually against campaigns like this because it seems so shallow and self-satisfying, ‘I’m sick and dying so I should cash in while I can’ and I can tell you I was more than wrong when it came to this. The main thing this campaign did for me was restore a bit of faith in humanity. It wasn’t just a mass retweet campaign to go meet some famous person or make some buzz on the internet, it was to support a sick friend. But it was more about a house full of sisters banding together in support, a support that is continuing even after she has passed. The day after she passed our campus held a candlelight vigil for her and fellow students have been wearing purple, Aly’s favorite color, all week in support. There is a run planned soon in McFarland, WI to support her as well.
I know this post is short and covering stuff you could read on your own and please do read more. I only want to support in what little I can and help spread exposure for heart warming stories like this.
