What’s better than watching puppets sing songs about porn and going commando? Watching puppets sing songs about porn and going commando at school.
This week, SF State’s Theatre Arts Department will be sponsoring the production Avenue Q, directed by Laura Schultze.
The play was originally written by Jeff Whitty, and opened as a musical production in 2003 with music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. San Francisco State student, Laura Schultze took on the challenge of directing this musical. Only a decade has passed and this musical has already climbed itself to the top of the charts, earning multiple Tony awards, Best Musical and Best Original Score, in 2004 as well as nominated for others.
The show is unique in that it is very much intended to portray a coming of age story using the same puppetry as Jim Henson Company’s Sesame Street. The irony within the show is that it utilizes the same techniques that Sesame Street uses to convey the oversimplified problems they face when trying to educate children. The puppets within this show, though, face conventional, as well as unconventional, problems many face when entering adulthood. Add a dash of humor and adult content, and this show molded itself into gold.
The show is projected to be a sell out on opening night at San Francisco State University. According to the online San Francisco State ticket vendor, there is no more seating available on opening night. But not to fret, the show will go on, and there will be more available seating, but you may want to reserve your seats now.
The show will run from April 25 through April 28 and May 1 through May 5, 2013 at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees.
Ticket prices range from 5 dollars to 15 dollars. The musical will be performed in the Little Theater, located in the Creative Arts Building.
