Boston Bombings- Brought Together By Terror

By April Minio on April 17, 2013

Monday April 15, 2013. It was a clear, sunny day in Boston-the heart of Massachusetts. Millions of people from around the world gathered as they were eager to get their day started. To many, April 15 was just another day, but to everyone who gathered in Boston it was a day they would remember forever.

People from all around the world came to participate in the Boston Marathon, a known tradition and an often anticipated, fun-filled day for runners. But little did anyone know that today would take a whole new literal meaning to “running for your life.”

The bombings came quick and out of nowhere. They were strategically placed near the finish line, coincidentally next to the array of flags that were placed there from surrounding countries. The first bombing happened causing people to be struck with terror and concern. No one knew what was happening, or why. All they knew was that they were in danger and with thousands of people around, there was nowhere safe to flee. Not even a minute later another bomb went off, causing more harm than the first. People began to fall to the ground, burns covering their body, some more fortunate people with scrapes and others trying to stand but unable to because of the strong impact on their bodies.

Medical personal, police squads, and the bomb squad all stepped in attempting to contain the bombs and reassure the terror stricken runners that everything would be okay. Without hesitation, stretchers began to fill the streets of Boston, transporting the injured off to nearby hospitals where they would begin amputations and other medical procedures. Those running in the marathon farther back became aware of the occurrences when they heard the sounds ringing out in the air, the cries melting together from all angles. While some runners stopped to find their loved ones or get to safety, others kept running. It was said that some participants of the Boston Marathon continued to run through the finish line all the way to the hospital, where they wanted to make a difference by aiding in any way they could- the most beneficial being blood transfusions.

Among the victims of this horrific bombing three individuals have been confirmed deceased, one being an eight year old boy. The number of wounded continues to sky rocket as the days go on, leading us to believe that things will never get better. Police are continuing to research what exactly happened and whether or not this was a full blown terrorist attack, however we have come to the conclusion that the bombs were home made devices, which leads us to assume that this was a premeditated act.

As we continue to keep Boston in our hearts, we can not help but reflect on our world and all of the hatred that occurs in it. Why does this happen? Why are there bad people? What constitutes their behavior and why bomb thousands of innocent people? The answers to these questions will always be unclear to us, and I don’t believe that there are any solid answers we will find, at least in this day and age. But I do believe that there is still good in our world. While we reflect back on the horrific occurrence and all of the hatred, we must remember the good. We must remember the men and women who came to take charge, the forces that came to the rescue and aided the injured, and the innocent bystanders and runners who, instead of fleeing themselves, went to the aid of others. In light of all the bad in our world today I believe that there is still good. And if we look hard enough, I believe that we can find it.
