Inside the 2013 UCSC Chancellor’s Reception

By Hilary Van Hoose on April 12, 2013

This April 6th, for the second year in a row, I and a few others attended the UCSC Chancellor’s Reception for newly admitted first-year honors & Regent Scholar students students as example continuing Regent Scholar students.

The event began at 9 AM in the outer room of the University Center, above the College 9 & 10 dining hall. The students and their guests (parents and a few siblings) filled the room within just a few minutes. I mostly answered general questions about financial aid, housing, and student life. I and one other continuing student were film majors, but (like last year) none of the attendees were prospective film students. I did find one of the attendee’s siblings who was interested in television, so I got to at least give one kid my best advice for learning about media production. Plus it was a girl, which makes me feel even better that I attended because it’s still a largely male-dominated industry.

Everyone was treated to a beautifully arranged selection of fruit, pastries, orange juice, water, hot tea and coffee.

Professor Shelley Stamp gives a presentation

After an hour or so of balancing my vittles in one hand and shaking hands with the other, everyone poured into the area normally used as a restaurant to hear speeches and presentations by Chancellor Blumenthal, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education Richard Hughey, two undergraduate research teams (Associate Professor of Environmental Studies Flora Lu and Nestor Silva, then Film & Digital Media Professor Shelley Stamp), and Director of Admissions Michael McCawley. This portion was largely the same as last year, except that a genetics research team had the timeslot occupied this year by Professor Stamp. Being a film student, I particularly enjoyed finding out that something like writing a long essay about television history is considered an example of prestigious undergraduate research.

After the speeches, we briefly returned to the front room to mingle for another half-hour or so before the attendees were walked down to the Quarry Plaza to tour through the Spring Spotlight booths.

I definitely recommend attending at least one of these kind of events if you are invited. It’s fun to give people the advice you wish someone had given you when you were choosing a school, and to see that parents other than yours get that same over-eager nervous energy when helping their kids find their path. Plus, hearing the cream of your university tell you what a great school you’re attending (and how prestigious it is to be in your honors program) is a real ego booster. In short, it’s just a fun way to spend a morning.
