Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Sell Out Breslin
The latest hip-hop sensation, Macklemore, and his trusty producer sidekick, Ryan Lewis, played a sold-out show yesterday at the Breslin Center. The crowd consisted of about 6,500 people.
The Spartans welcomed him with excitement, rushing to the front of the stage until about the fifth or sixth song.
That didn’t last too long, as Breslin Center authorities threatened to stop the concert if everyone did not return to their seats. Reluctant, but not yet discouraged, the crowd cooperated.
Macklemore interacted with the audience very well. He said that he had just done a corporate tour and was happy to be in front of dedicated fans again.
Other exciting aspects on stage included a music video backdrop, a trumpet/cymbal player from Kenya, a talented singer in bright, red skinny jeans and of course, the wearing of thrift shop apparel–notably a fur coat (referred to throughout the show as the “Michigan Fox”) that he borrowed from an audience member.
Ryan Lewis made sure to take part in interacting with the audience as well; jumping on top of various speakers and pointing the microphone in the general direction of the audience. Macklemore referred to his producer as having “the smoothest face with a beard on it.”
Dancing was inevitable and even in the nose-bleed sections of the Breslin Center, you could see audience members grooving and bouncing.
The rap ensemble kept the energy high and the tone lighthearted. They preached about equality, after which they played a very moving song.
For the encore, he came out in a sparkling blanket and hot-blond wig, but despite the gimmick it did not garner as large of a reaction as his hit song, “Thrift Shop.”
By the end of the night, he had told his faithful, Spartan fans that this was “the best show of 2013.”
