UMD Stamp offering classes for students and the public
University of Maryland students and the general public can explore their creativity through classes at the Stamp Student Union Art and Learning Center. Stamp is offering 25 classes this semester including painting, ceramics, self-development, music and dance. The classes typically last between five and 10 weeks.
Students do not have to worry about a rigorous class structure because these classes are not offered for credit. Ashley Inreesee, a graduate student, appreciates the relaxed atmosphere of her painting class.
“I think that in some ways it’s better than classes you can take at the university because there is less pressure to meet standards. You are given a lot of creativity and are allowed to mess up if you want to and do things at your own pace,” she said.
Talal Said, the staff undergraduate manager, believes these types of classes benefit the students.
“It’s less stress. No homework. You get to do it just for pure fun and enjoyment, so it’s a place to relax,” Said explained.
Even though the classes have a more relaxed atmosphere than college courses, instructors still want the students to get something out of them
“Why are you here? What is that you want to get? I want this class to address your individual needs. I want to tailor this class to each of your individual concerns,” said art instructor Michael Sandstrom to his students.
Many University of Maryland students have never heard of the classes offered at Stamp. However, Emily Figel, a sophomore, sees a need for the classes at the university
“I think people would appreciate creative outlets in academics,” she said.
Still, the Art and Learning Center has seen a rise in class enrollment this semester, Said said. The staff is continuing to increase the popularity of the classes through emails, free workshops and chalking.
If interested, you can register for the classes online. The classes cost money, but University of Maryland students receive a discount.
