5 Top Movie Trends of 2013

By Mollie Clark on March 21, 2013

2012 was an excellent year for films. I can not promise that 2013 will be as good of a year. I can’t tell if I approve of the 5 Top Movie Trends of 2013 that I’ve found in my research, but they’re here to stay regardless. For more information on any of these films or other up and coming productions, check for news and trailers here on IMDB.

1)      Young adult fantasy

With the Harry Potter and Twilight series over, producers everywhere are grabbling for the next big teen-fantasy. Warm Bodies might fall into this category, but more notably films like Beautiful Creatures and The Mortal Instrument (City of Bones) are just begging to be the next billion dollar franchise. By the looks of their trailers, let’s hope the youth of America don’t fall for either. There’s only so much supernatural romance and bad acting we, as a society, can stomach.

2)      Movies Re-released in 3D

Does anyone still get excited over this? Of course, it’s a genius way to make money fast; take a movie from about ten to twenty years ago, remind people how awesome it was, tell them it’s different now because it’s in 3D, and wait patiently for the money to roll in. But honestly, it’s pretty easy to get caught up in the hype, especially if you’ve only seen the film on television and want the real cinematic experience. If you were still in diapers in 1993, keep your eyes open for Jurassic Park being re-released in 3D on April 5th. Top Gun was also re-released in 3D at select IMAX theaters on February 8th and can be bought as a 3D Blu-ray. Disney has made some easy cash this way by re-releasing The Lion King and Monsters Inc. last year. They plans to re-release The Little Mermaid in 2013.

3)      Remakes of Classics

Look out for big budget remakes of classic stories this year. Oz the Great and Powerful has a star studded cast that includes James Franco and Mika Kunis in yet another spin off of  The Wonderful Wizard of Oz published in 1900. A more promising remake, The Great Gatsby featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and directed by Baz Luhrmann ( Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge), comes out on May 10th. If you’re more into Shakespeare than Fitzgerald, the British made, modern take, on Much Ado About Nothing will be released in the U.S. in June.

4)      Science Fiction

There seems to be more science fiction films than usual this year, especially big budget ones, probably due to the success of shows like The Walking Dead. On the agenda for this year are a lot of the usual material; zombies, superheroes, aliens, and apocalypse situations. Big stars like Will Smith and Brad Pitt will be returning to the genre with films After Earth and World War Z. Also watch out for Man of Steel (because America would be lost without a Superhero-Summer-Blockbuster) and Pacific Rim.

5)      Famous People Being Edgy

The most prominent example in this category is Spring Breakers which features four of the most famous teen stars of our generation (Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Rachel Corrine) bikini clad and doing dirty work for a white – trash gangster played by James Franco. Talk about over compensating for all of those years being a Disney angel. James Franco pops up again in This is The End, a film full of main stream male comedian actors (Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill) all playing themselves and trying their best to be even more offensive than usual.
