The Parking Lot Picnic

What do you do when you are starving late at night and aren’t ready to go home? My suggestion is to partake in the “parking lot picnic.” I jumped on board with the parking lot picnic my senior year of high school. I was out watching a McLean High School girls soccer game with three of my friends. Before the game I had been working a hair fund-raising event at my cosmetology school and didn’t have the chance to grab dinner.
Grumbling intently, my stomach cried out desperately with hunger. In a search for food, my belly was disappointed to discover that all the restaurants were closed. Suddenly a light bulb turned on in Bryan’s head and he suggested we have a “parking lot picnic.” Interested, we inquired what this event entailed.
Excitedly we jetted off to Safeway, the local grocery store. The four of us split up and picked out and purchased food. I chose turkey and english muffins. Food in hand we sat down in a grassy island near the light post. Jon turned on his car radio. Katy Perry’s song “If We Ever Meet Again” played as the cool breeze brushed our faces on a warm May night.
We ate, we talked, we laughed, and best of all we started a tradition. We all live in different cities now, but whenever we’re back in our hometown visiting we have a parking lot picnic. Eating food, making friends, and starting traditions is a part of college. Don’t miss the opportunity to get a little creative at times and pig out at odd hours of the night.
