Brighten Up Your Spring And Run a Race

Spring has sprung.  When the temperature starts to rise and flowers bloom throughout the city, Richmond’s residents depart their homes in search of fresh air, sunlight, scenery, and outdoor activities.  Especially within the past few months, runners have been increasing on city streets training for local races.  According to the race website, over 40,000 people ran the popular Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10-K last year.  Despite the temptation to head outside and participate, VCU students are as busy as ever.  It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos that comes with studying, working, hanging out with friends, exercising, and attempting to relax.  Still, students have good reason to take the initiative to train and compete in local events.

Although many people may not run 5-K, 10-K, or even longer distance races in order to defeat competition, there are several different reasons to enter.  For students who face the challenges of balancing many responsibilities, learning to schedule a training routine, setting goals, and reaching personal bests is good practice for future roles they may encounter.  In addition, according to the Mayo Clinic exercise controls weight, combats diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes sleep, improves sex stamina, and can be fun.  Students looking to train in nice neighborhoods and parks surrounding VCU are in luck, because there are a variety of routes and distances to take.

Both new and experienced runners will find training easy with some simple routes and training tips from experts online.  First, run on your own, or seek help with training plans at runnersworld.com.  Next, do not miss the sights on Monument Avenue-you can run down it from start to finish for about nine miles-Maymont Park, Bryan Park, and Belle Isle are some other options.  If you are new to the area, need directions, want to view other runners’ routes, would like to track your mileage, or wish to record your run times- create a free account on mapmyrun.com.  The motivation provided by having a goal in mind is priceless.  Richmond offers short and long distance races this time of year to choose from.

The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10-K is the most popular race.  But, the Richmond SPCA Dog Jog and 5-K Run, Be the One Run 5-K, Columbia Muddy Buddy, and the Rugged MANIAC 5-K all take place in the spring as well.

During the only season in Richmond when most people find running outdoors comfortable and even pleasureful, it’s a great idea to seize the day and take a challenge.  Although not every person enjoys running as well as the next, the benefits are numerous and the costs slim.  I suggest running a race if you want to see some flowers, lose some weight, get ready for summer, or be happier!
