Lebron's Historic Season

By Alex Carr on February 21, 2013

As any basketball fan knows, Lebron James is coming off his first NBA championship last season, which is dangerous for some players as they feel a sense of accomplishment and lose motivation. This is not the case for James, who is playing more motivated than ever, and having a season for the record books to show for it.  The three time NBA MVP is having what many people would say is his best season so far, and has led the Heat to an Eastern Conference leading record of 36-14 heading into the All-Star break. James’s play, along with the play of teammate Dwayne Wade who is also having a stellar season so far, has made the Heat an early favorite to repeat the title this year.

What’s more impressive is James performance as of late, the last 7 games in particular. It has been in these games that he has proven that this season its Lebron James, and then everyone else in the NBA. Over the amazing 7 game stretch, not only have the Heat gone 7-0, but James has done something that is simply unheard of in professional basketball. That is scoring at least 30 points, and shooting at least 60 percent from the field, making this recent span of games historic.

What’s even more shocking however, is that these numbers aren’t that far off of James’s outstanding season average for points per game and field goal percentage. So far this season “King James” has average just over 27 points per game while shooting 56 percent from the field, and an unbelievable 43 percent from beyond the three point line. That last statistic is what is really setting James apart from the competition this year. His improved shooting skills are making him almost impossible to guard this season, something that many basketball experts say was missing from his game in the past.

Lebron’s dominance this season was showcased in the Heat’s last game before the all-star break when they travelled to Oklahoma City to take on Kevin Durant and the Thunder, one of the Western Conference’s best teams this season. Miami entered the game as the underdog, a very rare scenario for the Heat, as Oklahoma City is a notoriously hard road win to earn. James however continued to roll just like he has all season, dropping 39 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to go along with 7 assists in a convincing 10 point win. Technically, James’s streak was broken as he shot a mere 58 percent from the field in Oklahoma City, but I think it would be safe to say his performance was nothing less than spectacular.

It’s quite clear that as of the mid season break in the NBA, Lebron is playing on a level that has been rarely seen before, and if his play continues this way, the future looks grim for the rest of the NBA and their 2013 title hopes.
