New CW Series "The Carrie Diaries"... We'll see
As a die-hard Sex and the City fan, I was initially excited to hear news about a prequel; however, it was originally reported that it would be a film chronicling the young lives of Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, and Miranda Hobbs. The last I heard regarding the film was back in 2011. Although the film remains to be seen, the CW recently premiered its version in The Carrie Diaries.

AnnaSophia Robb (known for portraying the lead role in the film Soul Surfer) steps into the pumps of Carrie Bradshaw, a high school student who takes on an internship at a Manhattan law firm shortly after her mother dies. She quickly meets a quirky fashionista who works for a hot style magazine (who doesn’t realize that Carrie is only 16 years-old). Although she doesn’t care about the internship at the law firm, she loves being in the city and takes every opportunity to meet up with Larissa Loughton (played by Freema Agyemen). In the first two episodes, Carrie is forced to juggle between school, her teenage friends, her love interest Sebastian Kidd (played by Austin Butler), her dad and sister, and the glamorous environment that Larissa lives in.
How is it, you ask? Well two weeks in, it’s okay. I was actually hoping that it would take us into the life of Carrie as a young adult who recently moved to the city (NYC) in search of her career as a writer. Instead we get more of a teeny bopper approach that most Sex and the City fans won’t likely appreciate. I think it would have worked better if HBO picked up the series so that it could be more closely related to the original series. In the CW version, it’s highly unlikely that Carrie will be bumping into Samantha, Charlotte, or Miranda any time soon, if ever. Although I haven’t fully read any of the books associated with either of the series, there are some holes when comparing the prequel to the original. In Sex and the City season 4, Carrie states in an episode that her father split when she was very young. In The Carrie Diaries, Carrie’s dad is a grieving father raising two teenage girls on his own. Luckily Sex and the City didn’t tell much of Carrie’s parents (or family at all for that matter) and never featured them, so fans may not catch those small details. Also during season 3 of Sex and the City, Carrie tells Charlotte that she lost her virginity in 11th grade to a boy named Seth Bateman. The young Carrie admits that she’s a virgin and so far, there’s no sign of Seth.
Anna Sophia Robb does a great job of embodying Carrie Bradshaw. I’ll give the show a chance and see how it goes. The big question is…Will the CW?
