"The Most Popular Girls in School" Take YouTube
Television shows and movies, such as Gossip Girl and Mean Girls, have featured what today’s society calls the “It girl,” for many years. These female roles constantly scheme to maintain their popularity while wearing designer clothes and heels.
“The Most Popular Girls in School” is a stop-motion web series on YouTube, unlike any of its genre. The cast is comprised of vulgar dolls with crude language and humor. Regina George has nothing on these dolls.
Carlo Moss and Mark Cope created this series that follows an on-going feud between the Van Buren sisters and Overland Park High School’s cheer squad. Originally airing in October of 2011, this show has grown from the various GIFs and meme’s plaguing sites like Tumblr and Facebook. “The Most Popular Girls in School” in its entirety has over 3,000,000 views.
The first season has 13 episodes ranging in run time from two to nine minutes. The pilot opens with a new girl, Deandra, who recently enrolled at Overland Park. She makes the mistake of going into the cheerleaders’ bathroom. While in the bathroom, Deandra has a confrontation with Mackenzie — a member of the cheer squad. This argument leads to Mackenzie calling Shay Van Buren a liar, which adds fuel to the fire of this feud.
Deandra quickly learns the way of Overland’s halls and befriends both the cheer squad and the Van Burens. Through the use of explicit humor this web series takes a stab at all aspects of high school life ranging from prom queen, self-discovery and pep rallies. No one makes it through this series unscathed.
If you are not comfortable with foul language and gratuitous sexual remarks than this show may not be for you. However, if you have an appreciation for crude humor “The Most Popular Girls in School” has announced that their second season is in production. You still have time to catch up and decide if you will be a Van Buren or a part of the cheer squad.
