ICECAPPELLA! and the Weekend Thereafter

By Linda Xu on January 22, 2013

With the start of a new semester, the new spring admits must be introduced to the power of a cappella at Mount Holyoke. While the first week of classes can overwhelm even the most seasoned of students after a long break, it’s time to introduce them to how Mount Holyoke celebrates productive fun. Who says college fun can’t be classy?

The ever-so-popular Blanchard Campus Center will be graced with the presence of a cappella once again this Friday night, January 25th, 2013, at 8 pm. Featuring the various musical personalities of Mount Holyoke a cappella with 5 ensembles, the springies—and anybody who wants to have a good time, to be honest—can come out, distress, and enjoy a night of music. From feminism to 90’s music to upholding the oldest female a cappella in the nation, we’ve got it all.

What are the a cappella groups getting out of this, you might ask? Somewhat selfish, I suppose, but Icecappella is the chance to promote and advertise our respected groups in the spring semester for interested students. There’s no competition like that in Pitch Perfect, but recruitment of strong voices is always on our minds.

I imagine that sign-up posters for auditions are in the process of being generated as I speak (type!) for the Saturday and Sunday thereafter. Going against all of what is natural and instinctive, I’m actually quite looking forward to the full (and very early) day on Saturday and being on the other end of auditions.

Interested in auditioning for fun and musical times with amazing people? You know you want to! Simply jot your name down (and there’s no shame in auditioning for several, even all, of the a cappella groups) and show up with a prepared verse and chorus of a song. The various groups will simply take that bit of time you reserved to test out ranges, listen to your solo, and get to know you a bit. Hopefully you’ll be at callbacks the next day to further market yourself as an ensemble-appropriate voice to the groups. However, keep in mind that this is a commitment you are willing to make. There will always be shows for you to enjoy, but the efforts put into those shows are both necessary and rewarding.

Don’t think you can make it? It’s always good to know a gist of where you are in relation to others, but my advice is that you can’t regret what you’ve tried your best to do. And, if worst comes to worst, there’s always Fall 2013! Regardless, Icecappella is something you should not, never in a million years, miss.
