Should you do Spring Rush?
As a student at FSU, you are aware of the prominent Greek life the campus offers, and with the new spring rush quickly approaching for sororities, many girls are left with the ever important question of “to rush or not to rush” hanging over their heads. When deciding the right answer to this question, a lot of things may cross your mind and I am here to help.
1. Do what you want to do
This probably seems like a stupid condition, but I have my reasons behind it. There is a lot of bad press about sororities and basically everything we see in movies tells us that sororities are full of mean girls that only judge people on their looks. And, admittedly, part of me believed this was true… until I actually met girls in a sorority. Like most things, the media is way off on what being in a sorority is all about. It’s not about the right clothes and hair, it’s about shrinking down an enormous school and surrounding yourself with people like you. So if you are thinking about rushing, but keep stopping yourself because you’re afraid of what people might think, snap out of it! Do what you want to do, and don’t let anyone else’s opinion sway you one way or another.
2. Consider the cost
If you do decide that a sorority is something you might be interested in, but you aren’t completely sure yet, look at the cost, in both time and money. It’s no secret that sororities cost money, but the benefits of food and social outings often even that out. What you also have to consider is the time a sorority takes. Between socials, meetings, and getting to know the girls around you, sororities are a big time commitment. This time is well spent, making memories and friendships, but it should definitely be counted into the equation when considering pursuing this opportunity.
3. Talking never hurt anybody
If, after considering all the pros and cons of being in a sorority, you still aren’t sure what you want to do, remember that Winterfest is free. If you think more information could help you make a decision, register at Greeklife.fsu.edu and come and talk to some of the girls. Talking to these girls may be the final tally to sway you to rush or to decline, regardless it’s free, so what’s the harm?
There are a lot of opportunities at FSU, a large one being Greek life. But deciding if being a part of the Greek community is something you’re interested in is a very personal decision and one that should be thought over. College is supposed to be the time of your life, but you’re the only one that can make it that way.
