Resume Talk: Some First Steps to Get Your Resume Going

By Aqsa Ahmad on January 15, 2013

Some of us are nearing our graduation date, while most of us are looking at ours like a looming, vague, and distant far off thing that will one day occur, just not anytime soon. You’d be surprised by how quickly this far off thing might turn into a near approaching thing that is occurring in a month or two! Regardless of when it comes or how close it is the one thing that you must walk away with, besides a degree, is a polished resume!

Having said that, I have had the unmerciful wakeup call this past winter break and have decided to brush up on my non-existent and thirsty resume. I decided to share the experience with the few readers that may happen to stumble upon my blog. I hope this is helpful!

I know this is obvious but first you have to type a resume or have a working one. You’re probably like: Well if that wasn’t obvious then I don’t know what is?! But it’s true you have to at least type out a resume with the proper heading and arrangement. For those of you who have no work experience there are some resumes on the web that do a good job of making it look like you do. Once you have a resume typed and ready to go you are one step closer to get a job or internship.

The next thing that you may or may not need but regardless would be good if you had anyways is a cover letter. I thought that I would not need one for a job on Campus but I was surprised to learn that some on the places here require you to have a cover letter. The UC Davis Job and Internship website is a great source to utilize; it has a template that tells you how to start off your cover letter, what to say in it, and how to end it. It’s really a great tool and if you haven’t checked it out you should.

The last, and most obvious, step would be to log on to the UC Davis Job and Internship website and upload your resume and cover letter and to submit and wait! You could also work off campus but, personally, I’d prefer to work on because it would be more convenient. I hope the job or internship hunt proves to be a fruitful one and I hope that my blog may have shed some light on the process. Good luck!
