NFL Playoffs : A Beginner's Guide
With the beginning of the new year also comes the beginning of the playoffs. There are many who enjoy the social atmosphere of the big games such as the Super Bowl, but know a little about football. Here’s a beginner’s guide to the playoffs, so you can look smarter in front of your friends and take part in the conversation.
Rookie Quarterbacks
Rookie quarterbacks will be playing a huge part in this year’s playoffs, with three current playoff teams starting rookies behind center. Andrew Luck was the first pick, and has exceeded expectations in his first year, leading a young Colts team to the playoffs. Robert Griffin III has helped turn around the Redskins after they traded valuable assets to get him. Third round pick Russell Wilson, who barely won the job in training camp, has thrown 26 touchdowns this year and is one of the surprises for the year.
Evolution of Quarterbacks
Most of the young quarterbacks entering the league present a dual threat to defenses, being able to run as well as throw the ball. Defenses are being faced with defending the read option, with quarterbacks equally as fast as running backs. Some notable names include Colin Kaepernick, Griffin, and Wilson, who all present huge problems as mobile quarterbacks.
Home-Field Advantage
Playing at home can be a huge advantage for teams. Sometimes the elements come into play, and teams from warm climates are forced to play in the snow, having to adjust their game plans. Other times, it’s the fans who are so loud that teams have trouble hearing on the field. Either way, there’s a reason why teams try to finish first in the league, in order to clinch that home-field advantage.
Kickers
In the playoffs, kickers are a huge part of the game. They will be asked to kick a forty yard field goal in freezing conditions, after standing on the sideline for an hour. And they are expected to make it. These men are paid millions to make it when it matters the most, in the closing moments of the game. Make a game winner, and instantly they are a hero. Miss it, and well, it’s likely that they will be in search for another team over the offseason.
The Old Guard Still Remains
Guys such as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are still here, looking just as good as they did half a decade ago. Champ Bailey still holding it down in the secondary for the Broncos, Charles Woodson of the Packers has returned just in time for the playoffs, and Tony Gonzales has had his best season in a while for the Falcons. While many were writing these individuals off, they are still playing at a high level trying to get that Super Bowl ring. And of course, who can forget Ray Lewis, playing in his last playoffs. The heart and soul of the Ravens defense is back, and he vows to give it everything he has, something no one will ever doubt.
Playoffs are a time for big moments. Whether it’s the young gun who barely made the team, or the old veteran playing in his last season, big plays will be made, and in the end, will determine who lifts the trophy on February 3rd.
