New Year's is Not For the Lonely
New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration. Except… what if you have nobody to celebrate with? There is so much hype surrounding the holiday, such as the best party to go to, or the biggest one, and even who to kiss at midnight.
New Year’s Eve seems like one big party, as it should. Out with the old year, in with the new. Not having anywhere to go can make the holiday stressful. One would figure that most college students have something to do. College is basically just one big party, isn’t it? Most people come home for their winter break (meaning most are home for New Year’s). However, celebrating New Year’s with high school friends might not be someone’s idea of fun. And sometimes those old friends find a way to celebrate with their college friends, making the holiday even worse.
In an article posted by Fox News, author Susan Shapiro said, “When you are younger, you feel a lot more pressure to go out and do something big. If you don’t, you feel like you are getting old.” Having that feeling would make anyone want to stay home and hide under their covers.
Social media doesn’t help the situation either. We already feel lonely, but seeing everyone on Facebook and Twitter having the time of their lives can surely bring someone down.
Not having anyone to kiss at midnight might just be the worst. It is one of the biggest New Year’s traditions and not being able to participate in it is a letdown. Plus, kissing someone at midnight sets the tone for the rest of the year. A couple who is celebrating together and doesn’t take the time for that kiss might have a relationship that is doomed for the future. Single people who don’t lock lips with someone at midnight supposedly have a year of loneliness ahead of them. That seems like a tremendous amount of pressure for something as simple as a midnight kiss.
Yet… fear not! There are other ways to have a happy New Year. Staying home and watching the ball drop can be just as fun as going out. I mean, you can wear comfy pajamas and not have to worry about suffering in the cold winter weather. You don’t have to deal with the risks of possible drunk-drivers. And as for the kissing aspect of New Year’s… is it really worth it to find some random person to kiss at midnight? That could bring even worse luck than having no one at all.
No matter what you do for New Year’s, keep in mind to have fun and remember: it’s just one day out of 365.
