My Rant About New Year's

By Aqsa Ahmad on December 31, 2012

I hate New Year resolutions. Before you judge me let me explain. Firstly, I have a bad relationship with them. Every year I promise myself something HUGE and every year I fail to meet this humongous resolution. Then that makes me upset and then I

decide that it doesn’t matter, when in fact it really does. Secondly, I feel this unknown weight and pressure settle on me the minute the clock chimes 12 on New Year’s Eve. I don’t know if that is a common phenomenon but man is it a buzz kill. Why start a New Year with a promise to do something, anything no matter how big or small? The idea just does not resonate with me for some reason. I would rather take life one day at a time. With a New Year’s resolution I know I have to put some effort and work into making sure I complete it–this is not how I want to start the New Year, personally.

One of the things that I know is a common New Year’s resolution, at least among females, is weight loss. For some reason this New Year’s resolution really peeves me! I wish people would stop judging themselves so harshly. I know it’s a common resolution and one that most people fail to meet for whatever reason. Also, with promising to lose weight comes the added stress of a diet, which I hate too. I don’t know why but diets are the worst social invention ever. Diets just don’t work for me and personally I find them more of a catalyst for eating junk food then avoiding it. This popular resolution really peeves me, frustrates me, and upsets me, I just cannot handle it.

On the other hand, I do understand why doing New Year’s resolution is still in vogue. This mostly has to do with the fact that it’s a tradition that has stuck so it naturally creeps into the New Year festivities. Yet also because you are promising to do something for yourself and that it is a very nice way to start the New Year. I suppose where the idea goes awry for me is when that resolution turns to something superficial, i.e. weight loss, and is not something beyond the realm of superficial. New Year’s resolutions are also good in that they allow for you to reflect on the passing year. Reflection is a good thing; this is where people notice what was good and what was not about the year. With that being said I do have a New Year’s resolution for this upcoming year and that is to take life one day at a time–I am notorious for jumping into the future–and to enjoy my day no matter what happens.
