Remembering the Victims

By Jasmine Lowe on December 21, 2012

Our nation has been plummeted into some very dark and devastating days. On the morning of December 14, 2012 twenty six human lives were brutally cut short. Twenty of the victims were young children, six were adults. On the day of this horrific tragedy a lot of information was recklessly thrown around without a second thought on the accuracy of what was being said.

In the manic chaos an innocent man was publicly accused for the murders, motives were pulled from thin air and even the number of shooters was incorrectly reported. But one thing was constant. The focus of each new story was the murderer. Who was he? How could someone be so heartless? What kind of psychopath could ever do such a thing?

Many theories have been tossed around. This individual who murdered twenty six people has been the center of social media for five days. Society gave this individual a celebrity status, and in doing so ensured that the name of a murderer will never be forgotten. There are two people in most crimes, the perpetrator and the victim.

The victims are the ones who we sympathize with. The victims are the ones that the police force fights for. So why is it, as a society, we are so fascinated by the life and times of a ruthless murderer? I am not going to go into the murky waters of a killers mind, nor am I going to go into detail of the immensely personal accounts of the victims that have been plastered across the news media. I simply wish to commemorate the beautiful souls who have had their lives ripped away. One can only hope that the families of the victims can find solace.

Each and every victim deserves to be remembered and immortalized far more than the individual who brutally took their lives. Those souls include Charlotte Bacon, 6, Daniel Barden, 7, Rachel Davino, 29, Olivia Engel, 6, Josephine Gay, 7, Ana M. Marquez-Greene, 6, Dylan Hockley, 6, Dawn Hochsprung, 47, Madeleine F. Hsu, 6, Catherine V. Hubbard, 6, Chase Kowalski, 7, Jesse Lewis, 6, James Mattioli, 6, Grace McDonnell, 7, Anne Marie Murphy, 52, Emilie Parker, 6, Jack Pinto, 6, Noah Pozner, 6, Caroline Previdi, 6, Jessica Rekos, 6, Avielle Richman, 6, Lauren Rousseau, 30, Mary Sherlach, 56, Victoria Soto, 27, Benjamin Wheeler, 6, and Allison N. Wyatt, 6.
