HeIsManziel. Happy Birthday Johnny

By Drew Chambers on December 11, 2012

I sat in the crowded restaurant Cheddar’s with my closest friends just enjoying my dinner and having the most fun possible. I then went to the movies and had a wonderful night. It was probably the best birthday of my college career, I was 20 and I had all of my friends to enjoy it with me.

What were you doing on your 20th birthday?

Johnny Manziel, I’m sure you know the name by now (if not, there is no hope for humanity), was in Orlando, Florida for his 20th birthday and a lot of people can say that it’s what he was doing there that makes it so special. Manziel was attending the College Football Awards where he was nominated for the Davy O’Brien and the Heisman runner-up award (aka the Maxwell Award).

Let me say that again, for his 20th birthday he was making history, being recognized for being the best quarterback in college football.

It is common in today’s society to see people celebrate their birthdays in weeks, even my family has done this as it has gotten harder to celebrate with my sister and me being in college.

To top off his birthday week – before media bombards him and won’t give him enough room to breathe – he only wins the most prestigious award arguably in all of sports.

I ask you again, what were you doing on your 20th birthday? Try to imagine your birthday party being on national TV…. twice….. in the same week.

Johnny got to celebrate with his family and close friends, but he also got to celebrate with the 40,000+ students, faculty, and staff not to mention the alumni and donors and the rest of the Aggie family. The Heisman wasn’t only a time to put Manziel on the map for Texas A&M, it wasn’t only recognizing him for the accomplishments he set this year, it wasn’t only signifying the prominence in Aggie sports. Friends, it was the main event of Johnny’s birthday party.

Sure “Happy Birthday” wasn’t sung, there wasn’t cake (at least not where I was), we didn’t even get to all tell him happy birthday, but that’s exactly what it was.

Don’t think that I’m downplaying this momentous occasion by any means. We will not be able to fathom what this means for him, his family, our Aggie family, or Texas A&M in general and we may never be able to, but this kid is 20 years old.

What were you doing when you were 20?

I started to look over what this means because I have gotten tired of all the talk for months and all the waiting around but Johnny deserves at least a few weeks to celebrate before kicking off another Heisman campaign. Shhhhhhhh, let’s not even start to think about that fact that he still has 3 whole years left.

The most amazing part of the night was probably when he said that the 12th man stands not as fans but as part of the team and that coming to Texas A&M was one of the best decisions of his life. Johnny, you have made your place in history with John David Crow, Earl Campbell, Bo Jackson, Tim Tebow, Doug Floutie, Davy O’Brien, and not only have you made your place in history with them you have brightened the future of Texas A&M to an extent that we will only see in coming years.

Happy Birthday Johnny “Freakin Football Heisman” Manziel.

God bless and Gig ‘em! ‘13
