De-Stress Before You Test

By April Minio on December 13, 2012

Finals week can bring about a plethora emotions for everyone. You may feel angered at the lack of information your professor taught you, mind boggled by the amount of definitions you need to memorize for a foreign language, or completely unresponsive when looking at all your study guides spread out together on one giant table. No need to fret, every single college student knows first hand what you’re going through, and take my word for it when I say we’re all in the same boat trying to paddle our way to success.

I love camping out at the library just as much as the next person (actually I truly do). Around finals time though, the library becomes crowded with people who overtake all of the comfy chairs and study rooms. Personally, I go to the library to get things completed, whether it’s reading a book for class or studying for an exam. When I’m in the prescence of others who are doing the same thing the vibe rubs off on me, and I work more diligently. Focusin is much easier in the library than in my room (at least for me). If you are of the variety that gets distracted by other people easily, the dorm might be where you study best. Wherever you choose to study make sure you place yourself in a calm and focused environment, that way you’re sure to get all of your work done and (fingers crossed) get an A on your assignment or test.

During finals, eat, breathe, study, becomes the mantra. And if you’re one of the lucky few, you might still have time to maintain a normal 8 hour sleep schedule without fretting the next day about losing precious studying time. Before you hit the books, do something for yourself. Go for a run to clear your mind of all your excess thoughts. Have a movie break or catch up on your favorite TV shows; a few episodes won’t hurt you and it’ll give you a chance to unwind.. Last but not least make sure to sleep. Lots of times students feel that sleep will come whenever they’re finished studying, but getting enough sleep can actually improve your brain’s ability to retain the information you are cramming into it.

If you’re studying for a final, completing a final paper, or studying for tests on top of tests, remember to take breaks and de-stress once in a while. An unhappy you won’t benefit your score at all and will only make your stress levels grow higher.
