Sports are Life, but NOT All There Is to Life

By Drew Chambers on December 12, 2012

I have written an article that talks about why Sports are Life, but now I want to go even further into that. Sports can relate to life in a lot of different ways, but what happens when sports are over?

In an amazing year for Aggie athletics it seemed like nothing could bring anyone down. Our first Heisman in forever, Thomas Johnson basically got a free ticket out of a media circus with everyone still only speculating what happened and wondering if he’s even still on the team, volleyball played young and fresh and allowed t.u. to enjoy a non-meaningful victory over us in the big scheme of things in the NCAA tourney.

When things looked amazing for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, one of the best and biggest contributors to the women’s team made the decision to leave the team due to an injury that had been bothering her for a little over a year now. Alexia Standish, sophomore guard and Communication major, made the tough decision to leave the team after playing a few games and realizing it would be best for her to  move on.

To Alexia I say, you proved to be more than an athlete and scholar but an inspiration as well. We as the Aggie family wish you the best in future endeavors and only expect the most amazing accomplishments.

As I usually mention, what in the world does that have to do with us in everyday life? Sometimes life gives you lemons or throws you curves. It’s not what you have done, but what you will do that will set you apart. Yes, sports can teach you this, but it only takes you so far. Do you have courage or the character to learn and continue to better yourself when sports are taken away? Or what about when a best friend leaves you? God forbid, a death in the family? How will you react?

There are a lot of things that are important when it comes to life and the life lessons you learn are most often learned through experiences with those around you. So enjoy them while you can and remember no matter what is going on in your life: It’s not what you did, but what you will do and I have found the only way I can keep going is through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Sports are life, but NOT all there is to life so live it accordingly!

God bless and Gig ‘em! ’13
