NPHC at FSU
The National Pan-Hellenic Council has a rich history of culture, unity and progress. The “Divine Nine” which includes Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, is more than just step teams who compete against each other; they are men and women who join each other to create a positive sustainable change. From the day these nine organizations have been created, they have continuously had a positive impact in the community.
Recently, with hazing charges making national news, it’s as if the bad has outweighed the good. Many misconceptions have created a new image that is not always as positive as it should be. These incidents should not reflect the reputation of every individual in these organizations. NPHC fraternities and sororities are always giving a helping hand to those in needs. With guidance, mentorship, scholarships and support, fraternities and sororities have sent thousands of people to college. The NPHC is comprised of many positive role models and successful and educated men and women. The majority of our leaders in our campuses and in the country have been shaped and enhanced with the help of their respective organizations. The lifetime commitment that comes with joining such organizations is what makes it possible to continue the legacy the founders of these organizations envisioned.
The amount of work and dedication that comes with being in an NPHC organization is very notable. In addition to step shows and parties, Greek life comes with long meetings, events and conferences that not only take a lot of time but money also. That’s the main reason membership through these organizations is so selective. They need to know that the people coming in are willing to dedicate the time and money that comes with membership in order to continue to have a remarkable impact in the community.
Next time you see an NPHC member, make sure to thank them for their impact on the community. A few hazing allegations should not be enough to completely eliminate this group of selfless men and women who have who have impacted the world for over 100 years now. With strength and determination, the NPHC is here to stay and there is a lot more that needs to be accomplished in the future.
