Girl Crush: Lena Dunham

By Charlotte Gibson on December 13, 2012

What makes for the perfect girl crush?  Is it the girl’s luscious locks gracing her ivory skin?  Or maybe it’s the girl’s bold, blue eyes with piercing lashes?  Although someone’s captivating, luscious locks and intriguing, bold eyes can be flashing signs of a crush, my girl crush is more than what meets the eye.

Is she luscious?  Yes.  Bold?  Most definitely.  But I would not use those words to describe her physical appearance because this girl’s interior breaks through the barriers of the modern-day, Hollywood starlet.

For starters, my girl crush can be identified as a girl that has brains and beauty and isn’t afraid to flash the world the bird every once and a while.  Not the least bit trashy but definitely not classy, Lena Dunahm is the epitome of my girl crush.  And I am not ashamed to say that I want to be her best friend and her protege, all at the same time.

American filmmaker and actress, Dunham has an impressive resume at the fresh age of 26.  She wrote and directed the independent film Tiny Furniture (2010) and is the creator and star of the HBO series Girls.  Did I mention she was nominated for 4 Emmy Awards for Girls in 2012?

Call it what you want, but Dunham is an inspiration to young females and filmmakers everywhere.

Dunham captivates audiences with her realistic portrayal of life after college, for the liberal-minded females of the world.  In her 2012 independent film, Tiny Furniture, Dunham illustrates the reality of moving back home after being away in college for the past four years.  Not once does Dunham glamorize her character’s experience, but she rather sheds a light on the truth that life does not get easier after reaching the age of 21 and earning a college degree.  (I am not going to give away any spoilers because it is just too brilliant to capture the film’s essence in a few words.)

Furthermore, in the HBO series Girls, Dunham plays the aspiring writer Hannah living in Brooklyn with her friends.  After receiving the shocking news of no longer being financially supported by her parents, Dunham’s character has to navigate through Brooklyn using her own devices and taking “one mistake at a time.”

Girls is not your average Sex and the City or Gossip Girl.  It is filled with real-life experiences from Dunham and her friends and shares the harsh reality for college graduates pursuing a career that is “Carrie Bradshaw” worthy.  Dunham does not grace over anything lightly and there is not always a fairy-tale ending with each new episode.  And that is what makes Dunham so brilliant!  Girls is an accurate reflection of the modern-day, twenty-something year old trying to make it on her own while dealing with the struggles of friends, boyfriends, parents, and employers.

So maybe my girl crush can be identified through my yearning to follow in the path of Dunham’s career success at such a young age?  Or maybe my girl crush relies solely on the idea that Dunham is able to portray an accurate representation of the the female, post-graduate dealing with sex scandals and friendship issues, while still appearing internally beautiful and formidable?

In all honesty, it’s all of the above.  Lena Dunham is the ultimate girl crush because she is intelligent, passionate, honest, and innovative, while still being unbelievably unique and eclectic in the age of the primadonnas and barbie dolls.

As a 20 year old female, I am inspired by Lena Dunham to follow my passion and not let anyone ever tell me that I am not good enough or capable to pursue my dreams.  No matter what challenges come my way, Dunham has taught me through her film and television series that life is not always sunshine and rainbows, but you just have to put your big, girl panties on and tough it out!

To further enhance my girl crush, I have already scheduled an appointment with Dunham at 9pm on January 13, 2013 for the season 2 premiere of Girls on HBO.
