College-Friendly Christmas Cookies

By Lucy Infeld on December 1, 2012

One of my favorite holiday traditions is Christmas cookies; I know a lot of parents and student groups have cookie exchanges, and I find

that having a few easy recipes up one’s sleeve tends to be great for this time of year. There are always the classic gingerbread, the more intricate and fancy designer cookies. Being a college student, I tend to enjoy something seasonal, but have managed to find an awesome and simple recipe that is both delicious and festive. In the Christmas spirit, I am willing to share one of my favorite recipes.

All that you need are a bag of Oreos (I personally prefer the Winter Oreos… I’m not sure if the red crème actually makes them taste better or if it is just in my head), whatever your favorite kind of chocolate chips are (white tends to look really festive), and a bunch of candy canes!

First, crush up the candy canes into a pile and set out a cookie sheet with parchment paper on it. Now for the most technical step of the process: melt the chocolate chips! I usually do this by heating up a bowl full of water and placing the chocolate chips in another bowl, then putting the bowl with the chocolate chips over the bowl of hot water and stirring the chips until they melt properly. When the chocolate is melted, dip the Oreos in it until they are nicely coated. Place the chocolate covered Oreos on the cookie sheet and sprinkle the broken and/or crushed candy canes on top of the Oreos. Place the cookie sheet in the fridge and hold yourself back from eating them all until they have cooled and hardened.

Throw the cooled candy cane Oreos in a festive cookie can and impress everyone, or eat all them yourself while studying for finals–no judgment here!
