Pop Culture for Dummies
I was rushing up to campus one day when I overheard a discussion between two girls that had me face-palming. One of the girls turned to the other and frustratingly exclaimed “my roommates always compare me to Lady Gaga…..no wait….not Lady Gaga….Kendra!”
Um, you mean Ke$ha? Yikes. She followed that up by saying “It’s probably because I like sparkles.”
Okay, I realize that at college students are fairly cut off from the rest of the world, especially at BYU, but that one left me slightly flabbergasted. How is anyone my age so removed that they don’t know the most basic pop culture?
But then I got to thinking, is that really such a bad thing? I found myself flashing back to my contemplation on political figures and I realized that not knowing who Katy Perry is, isn’t the end of the world. In looking at pop culture verses politics, being ignorant about Hollywood is definitely the “lesser of two evils.” There are far more important ways for students to be spending their time.
Regardless of all of that, I still think it’s important to know what is going on in the world around us, even if we aren’t currently involved in those types of things as we pursue our education. A little bit of basic knowledge isn’t going to hurt anyone. If you want a place to start, I’d suggest learning about James Roday and Dule Hill. I promise you won’t regret that decision.
And hey, I guess I shouldn’t be TOO harsh on that girl. She did know that Ke$ha likes sparkles after all……
