Three Ways to Wear the Denim Shirt

By Nkongho Beteck on January 20, 2013

The denim shirt: this casual button down staple grazed from the Ralph Lauren runway to the school hallways and was even worn by notable celebrities like David Beckham.

Originally meant to be worn for ranches, farmers and chores, people have been wearing denim as a shirt since the early 1950s. With the popularity it has gained from the ranch to the runway, it’s inevitable that people have found different ways to rock this classic top.

Here are three looks that both guys and girls can try to make the denim shirt their own.

1. With darker denim:

You have to be careful with a denim on denim combo because it can appear too matchy and overwhelming if not executed correctly. Try a lighter colored shirt with darker colored jeans to avoid looking like Timberlake and Spears at the 2001 AMA’s.

2. To tone down a more formal outfit:

If you’re not feeling too dressy, nothing adds a more casual staple than the denim shirt-especially when nothing else in your outfit goes with it. Shrug it onto a cute dress or wear it as an imitation collard shirt.

3. Underneath a sweater

The shirt instantly becomes a little preppier underneath a sweater or cardigan. You can go even preppier with a pair of Oxfords or Sperry Top-Siders.
