Maryland Students Anxious for Thanksgiving Break

By Shannon Atran on November 27, 2012

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, students at the University of Maryland are excited to get a break from their fast-paced college lifestyles.

“I’m excited because I get to relax at home, eat good food and see my friends from home who I haven’t seen in months,” Nima Farchadi, a junior biology major, says.

Students are also excited to spend the holiday with their families.

“I like the opportunity to sit down with all my family members together. It’s one of the rare opportunities that everyone is there,” Andi Hubbell, a sophomore English major, says.

But if there is one thing that is on the back of every student’s mind, it is the Thanksgiving food. Students finally get a break from Dining Hall food and come home to a nice home-cooked meal.

“We always make a lot of food for Thanksgiving, which is always exciting. The food is by far the best part!” Jasmine Song, sophomore journalism major, says.

In addition to the food, students are excited to partake in their favorite Thanksgiving traditions that they have been doing for years.

“I always wake up early to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade with my mom. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid,” Farchadi says.

For some students, their Thanksgiving traditions involve traveling. Katharine Cook, a sophomore psychology major, plans on going back home to Connecticut, but later heading to Vermont to spend time with her family.

While there, Cook will, “snowboard, eat lots of yummy food and enjoy the laidback atmosphere.”

Even though students get a break from classes for a few days, work will still be on their minds during the holiday.

“I am not excited to be working on stuff I have due the following week while I am home,” Hubbell says.

Luckily, students have the long winter break to look forward to shortly after Thanksgiving.
