Pats Win Big but Lose Gronkowski

By Alex Carr on November 26, 2012

The only way to describe the Patriots 59-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday is a beatdown, with the Patriots offense and special teams having their way with the Colts. Tying their franchise record for points with 59, the Patriots were able to score on offense, defense, and special teams on Sunday and made it look easy. Tom Brady was his usual self, throwing for three touchdowns and engineering dominating performance by the offense, who received a breakout game from wide receiver Julien Edelman. Pats fans have been waiting for Edelman to break out and finally on Sunday he was able to utilize his blazing speed and make some huge plays for the Pats. On top of his one receiving touchdown, he was able to return a punt for a touchdown, his third career return touchdown for the Patriots.

The Patriots troubled secondary finally had a better game in their attempt to get back on track, and much of this was do to the addition of cornerback Aquib Talib, who started his first game with New England on Sunday. Talib was sure to make his impact felt immediately, returning his first interception as a Patriot all the way to the house for six points and igniting a wave of momentum that the Pats would ride out for the rest of the game. The nightmare wasn’t over for Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck though, as rookie defensive back Alfonzo Dennard would return another interception for a touchdown in the second half. With two touchdowns coming from their secondary, it was clear that for the first time in a while the Patriots were really firing on all cylinders, and when that is the case they can’t be stopped.

It wasn’t all good news for the Patriots on Sunday however, as Tight End Rob Gronkowski, who had already grabbed two touchdowns in the game, was lost in the fourth quarter with a broken forearm. With Gronkowski asserting himself as far and away the best tight end in the NFL, this is clearly a huge loss for the Pats. But not so much that Pats fans should be worried. Tight end is arguable the deepest position on the Patriots roster, and injured tight end Aaron Hernandez is slated to return very soon. The Patriots currently hold a strong three game lead in the division, and at this point are confident that Gronkowski will be back on the field before the playoffs begin. The goal for the time being is to just keep winning without him. With Bill Belichick steering the course this should just be a minor speed bump in what could be a very promising season for the Patriots.
