The Black Moon Music Lounge
After four years of musical fun and festivites, The Black Moon Music Lounge at 37 State Street in Belchertown, Massachusetts will be closing it’s doors at the end of December, 2012. The Black Moon is a live music venue and bar that has live entertainment 7 nights a week. It features “a variety of local and regional acts, as well as 8 tasty brews on tap, great wines, a large selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, a martini of the week and beer specials. Every Thursday is FREE pizza night, courtesy of the Common Italian (on the common).”
The Black Moon is dimly lit and offers a romantic atmosphere. I have often seen couples at the Black Moon enjoying drinks and live music. The entertainment ranges from art displays, singer/songwriters, and comedians to heavy metal bands and DJ’s.
Shauna Wallace worked as a bartender and assistant manager at the Black Moon for almost the entirety of it’s existence. She says “What makes the Black Moon special is the great music, the comfortable environment and the great selection of drinks. There are six taps, a full bar, and a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks.” What is also special is how The Black Moon attracts all different kinds of people. Shauna says, “parents even bring their kids.”
Shauna says out of the three and a half years she worked there, she only ever saw one band she disliked. In Shauna’s opinion, it is definitely not the quality of the music or establishment that is causing The Black Moon to close. “One big problem is that many of the bands the Black Moon scheduled were new bands and they didn’t know how to promote their shows and couldn’t draw a big enough audience.”
“The saddest part of the Black Moon closing is just that it’s not going to be there anymore. But there’s going to be a New Years party with comedians, open mic live music, and probably a potluck.”
