How I Met My Roomies
My personal experience with roommate selection was random. Here at The Ohio State University, I joined a Scholars group, which means that for my first year I have to live in a Scholars House with my other Scholars. So while my roommate assignment was random, it was from a narrower pool. Living in a quad, I got three new roommates.
The first roommate, who I will refer to as X, is completely silent. She barely talks and when prompted she seems awkward and almost pained that she has to provide a response. This does not make for fast friends. However–more importantly–she maintains the cleanest work and living areas I have ever seen… therefore, check plus for roommate X in my book.
The second roommate, who I will refer to as Y, is also quiet around me, but she talks to herself a lot. She will talk to herself when she is studying, or simply on her laptop; the concise way to put it is that she narrates her life, in a way. I can’t lie that I do find this disturbing at times (especially whenever she starts arguing with herself). Y also is messy, and is painfully socially awkward, so trying to discuss anything with her is impossible. Whenever the topic of overnight guests came up while making our roommate agreement, she was befuddled as to where they would be sleeping if there wasn’t a guest hotel. Therefore, all things considered, check minus for Y.
The third roommate, who I will refer to as Z, is extremely talkative. She is the most normal girl out of the bunch; I am able to actually talk to her and have established a friendship with her. She is similar to me in the level of cleanliness that we maintain. However, Z seems to still be maturing in some aspects–unfortunately for me, she is obsessed with One Direction and believes that she is good at sarcasm (she is not). In conclusion, Z receives a check.
As it were, finding these three unique roommates was pure chance–we all took the basic roommate questions when filling out our housing contract and all got thrown in together. I remember the first night we were all here, almost no one talked, and I know that I for one was wondering how in the hell I was going to make it work for a year!
