Sandy: An Innocent Name For A Sadistic Disaster

By Chad Anthony on November 6, 2012

Whoever chooses the names for hurricanes should reevaluate the system.  ”Sandy” poses as much of a threat as a 5 year old blonde girl with safety scissors.

This psychotic chain-saw wielding ex-girlfriend of a system was classified as a nontropical storm before hitting Atlantic City in late October.  Very quickly, however, the storm transformed into a post-tropical cyclone due to its’ colliding with arctic air.  For reasons only a meteorologist could rightfully explain, this crash magnified Sandy to span almost 1,000 miles.  This one cyclone affected areas in Southern Virginia and West Virginia with two feet of snow and individuals in the Mid-West felt the whipping of Sandy with high winds, rain, and snow.  Nothing compares to the punishment families, homes, and businesses suffered in New England.

15 foot waves easily washed away the Jersey boardwalk in Seaside Heights and Belmar as if constructed with toothpicks and Elmer’s glue.  Amusement parks crumbled under the force of rising tides.  Boats became a  necessity to navigate the streets as the flooding ensued.  Hoboken, a city adjacent to Manhattan separated by the Hudson River, became a kiddie pool as the seawalls on the north and south sides were rendered useless.  New York City tunnels filled with millions of gallons of water.  Parts of Manhattan inevitably flooded, putting numerous individuals without power.  Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut  among other states suffered in the jarring destruction of Sandy.  Over 100 people have been reported deceased as a result of the storm.  The number will only rise as rescue efforts and clean up continue.

As I read through the news updates and breaking stories, I can only think of how one horrid storm, one major tragedy refocuses an individual.  Disregard the traffic jams in the work commute.  Forget about the upcoming test.  Realize that all of what is in front of you can be taken away in an instant.  Try to appreciate the small idiosyncratic aspects of day to day life.  The individuals in New Jersey are thankful for any aid sent their way.  The relief has been underway since the start of November.  The people in New Jersey need each person’s help in rebuilding.  The American Red Cross is accepting donations.  Multiple clothing websites are donating 100% of certain profits toward New Jersey rebuilding fund.  New Jersey surf shop Seven3Two created a special line of clothing specifically for the cause.  Jumping on the philanthropy wagon, Ergo Clothing teamed with Restore The Shore to provide another way to donate.  Give whatever you can, reader.  I donated by buying a shirt and hat.  It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The majority of individuals will only see the shore from their couches across the country; however, for the shore residents, the beach was so much more to them than t-shirt shops and the occasional spotting of a drunken, steroid-riddled guido from the “The Jersey Shore”.  It was and still is home.
