Let's Not Forget: Destruction, Devastation, and Despair- The Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

By April Minio on November 7, 2012

News anchors all over the world have been covering the much anticipated and feared Hurricane Sandy or better known as “Frakenstorm” for weeks. From tracking her speeds and movements to watching where she hit this storm has been one for the books. Classified as a Hurricane and then a Tropical Cyclone, Sandy attacked and destroyed small towns, big cities, and everything in between. While many states were affected by this storm the focus has been on two major states, both getting the brunt of the storm; New York and New Jersey.

The Big Apple, the go to place for anything and everything, was destroyed as Sandy whipped her winds and caused high tide waters, leaving officials and residents to pick up the pieces. Many parts of New York were affected significantly by the high winds, resulting in falling trees and down power lines. The incredible amount of water that came with Sandy increased the likelihood for storm surges and aroused high caution for flooding. According to the New York Times, as of Sunday morning, October 28, 2012 over 73,000 people were affected by this storm, resulting in loss of power and significant amounts of damage. NYU Medical Center was forced to take their patients and move to a new location because of loss of power and malfunction of a back up generator.

Right now relief groups are being placed in New York to help with the devastation and hopefully speed up the restoration process. The Mayor of New York along with other government officials is trying to create public housing for those who aren’t able to get back into their house.

New Jersey faced the brunt of the storm. The once fun and stable beaches of New Jersey are now working to rebuild what they had. Long Beach Island, Ocean City, Wildwood, Sea Side Heights and many other shore points are doing everything they can to clean up from the mayhem that pummeled their town. Atlantic City experienced harsh conditions as their once solid boardwalk is now floating somewhere in the Atlantic. Governor Chris Christie along with President Barack Obama made their way to the various shore points in New Jersey, surveying the damage that was done in hopes of rebuilding and recreating what once gave everyone so many great memories. Mandatory evacuations were made throughout the state of New Jersey in hopes that people would relocate and escape this horrific act of nature. Full coverage of Governor Chris Christie’s speech was broadcasted over local news channels, stating his plan of action to be completed next.

State officials are working hard to rebuild what is left of their towns and place reassurance in the minds of the northeastern population. If you’re interested in aiding with this rebuilding process contact your local news station or visit the Red Cross Hurricane Aid website for more information.
