Tips on 'Making it' Through the Second Half of Semester

By Anibal Pacheco on November 10, 2012

So, midterms are over. I bet you’ve been checking grades too. Some of you did fantastic and you’re ready to take on the rest of the semester but maybe some of you didn’t do so hot on the midterm. If you didn’t even make the average grade of the class, I’m here to help you. Seeing that horrific grade will bring down your hopes. Don’t let it! I mean it! Really, don’t look at that grade as a sign that says “Failure, loser.” You are not. Fine tuning is needed to bring or save your grade. Also tips that can help you improve.

  1. Talk to your professor. If you did badly on a test, ask to see the test if you didn’t get a chance to see it. See where you did wrong. Remember those wrong answers that way you won’t trip up again. You will also realize what topics you need to study more.

  2. Set up a schedule. Plan when you’re going to study and what you’re going to study. Planning helps think about what time you have in any given day. Stopping that ever so famous saying, “I don’t have enough time in the day.” Also it will help you keep track of how much time you need to spend on each class. It will make you prioritize which class needs the most attention.
  3. After planning your life, write it down in a planner. Planning out when you’re going to study isn’t going help if you don’t write it down in a planner. Writing your schedule down in a planner will make you more committed to it. It’s like signing a contract with yourself. We all know what happens when we break contracts. Bad things happen. Don’t break contracts with yourself!
  4. This part will be hard to swallow, like fish oil. Trust me though it’s for the best. Fish oil is good for you, so is this. Limit your partying, try going out like once a week. If you’re a hardcore partier, try bargaining down to three days if you get studying done early. I don’t mean stop seeing friends but don’t go to the bar if you planned to study that night, or the next day. Partying too much not only costs you time but concentration can be hurt by it as well. You can’t study properly if you’re hung-over the day after drinking.
  5. This will sound similar to number four, but it’s not trust me, get yourself away from distractions. When it’s time to study, STUDY. If you have Netflix open with your favorite series playing you will spilt your concentration. Studying is the one time where multitasking will hinder you. Music can still be played, just make sure it’s something that’s going to help you focus. We don’t want you dancing to a good Rihanna song. Leave your room and head to the library. Get yourself in the mood to focus and conquer. Studying is a time for you and the subject you’re studying. Nothing else.

These are just a few tips that can help get you that “A”, even if it’s in a class that you dread. A “B” can still be made even if you made a couple bad grades on some of the assignments in your classes. Don’t ever think it’s too late to get that grade up and always think of creative ways to study. Perseverance and dedication will get you a long way.
