SF Goes Black and Orange: Giants World Series Parade 2012
On October 28, 2012, the San Francisco Giants once again made history with a 4-0 sweep against the Detroit Tigers. On October 31st, the Giants and its fans took Market Street, San Francisco by storm with almost 35,000 more people attending than the 2010 parade to celebrate the World Champion win. In case, you were wondering, that’s one million altogether! With parade attendance at its maximum and Bay Area school attendance at a minimum, it was clear that SF was the place to be last Wednesday.
With the boisterous company and friendly San Franciscans, it was well worth the commute for some people, travelling as far as Los Angeles. I myself set my alarm for six sharp to make the commute from Santa Cruz to Millbrae in order to take the Bart over to the Civic Center. As a matter of fact, commuter numbers increased by a good 56% more than usual, with Bart and Caltrain lines out the door with people clad in orange and black.
And as if the city and its fans weren’t crazy enough, this year’s parade coincided with Halloween! Fans young and old embraced their Giants and Halloween spirit simultaneously. What was one of the most popular costumes featured at the parade? Decked out black and orange witches, complete with witches brooms to signify the Giant 4-0 sweep!
The congratulatory speakers included former mayor Gavin Newsom, relief pitcher Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez, Pablo “The Panda” Sandoval, as well as Mayor Lee, who presented the team with a Key to the City and a commemorative golden broom. Of course people went crazy for fan favorites for this season, Matt Cain, Buster Posey, and Panda. And to close out the ceremony, special guest, Tony Bennet, brought it out with a rendering of “I Left My Heart at San Francisco,” followed by one and a half tons of confetti to shower the players and crowd.
