How to Fill Your Sports Craving Now that Baseball Season is Over

I love baseball, especially the Texas Rangers, and am extremely sad now that the season is over, but constantly checking updates on free agents and trades that are already beginning. In lieu of this dilemma, I decided I would try supporting a different sport that my campus offers. My school does not have football, but we do have hockey.

I went to a couple games last year but didn’t know very much about the sport. I have started talking to my friends that know about the game and they are teaching me the rules and the main players’ names and other basic aspects. You don’t have to go to a game played by your school team, you could also get some friends together to watch professional sports on TV or go to a game if your town or city has one. Find something you are interested in and try to get people together to learn about it and watch it with you!

I would definitely encourage others to go ahead and try to learn about different sports. It is a great way to make more friends and to learn something new that won’t be tested on later. A few suggestions I have for going about this would be to first, find other people you know that may be interested in the sport. This doesn’t have to be a sport that everyone loves; it could be a club sport or a major sport that your school competes in. If you are in a city, try rooting for their local sports as well if you don’t have an affiliation with your home sports!

You can also get involved in intramural sports. Many of these programs offer sports that are less focused on physical ability and more about having fun. I know at my school they offer things like kickball, 5-on-5 indoor soccer, and broom ball. These are always great ways to get involved, stay in shape and to take your mind off the fact that you miss baseball.

You can also start a Baseball appreciation club on campus. There are bound to be many other people  trying to cope with the end of the season, so by getting together and talking stats and player trades, you might feel a little bit less lost without the sport you love! When the season starts again, you have a new group of friends to watch the games with. If your school already has a club like this, join it!

Whatever you do, remember, there are always ways to meet new people and to try new things even if it is as simple of a change as trying to play a new sport. Heck, your school might even have an intramural or club baseball team for you to join. Either way, get active and remember spring training will come sooner than we all think!
