The Love Triangle You Will Face in College

By Joseph Barry on November 1, 2012

All great love stories possess a triangle of lovers. Think about it. In Twilight, there is Bella, Edward and Jacob. The Hunger Games shows Katniss’s struggle between Gale and Peeta. The Love Triangle also makes an appearance in Shakespeare’s works, most notably in Twelfth Night. Love Triangles have been in existence since the most primitive forms of storytelling, and understandably so: they add an extra element of interest and conflict to stories.

Maybe you’ve told yourself, “I’ll never find myself in this situation. I’ll be loyal to my boyfriend/girlfriend no matter the cost. I don’t want to get caught up in a situation like this.” Well too bad for you, my friend. Whether you can help it or not, you will face this situation sooner or later.

Your original love has always had your back. They have evolved with you; as you grew, they grew. You love them and will always be grateful, especially as you remember all the times you had, such as sleeping in those late summer mornings.

I, of course, am talking about your bed. No matter how often you leave, you always find yourself coming back; when you can’t spend as much time with your bed as you like, it proves to have a short memory and always welcomes you with open arms. It doesn’t care that you spend your time with other endeavors, because your bed knows that you will always come crawling back to spend your most precious time with it.

However, now that you’re in college, you become involved with a bed’s greatest enemy: studying. Long nights at the library or a local Starbucks, it doesn’t matter where. You suddenly have less time to spend with your childhood, which is bad enough. But to cheat on your bed with the hated schoolwork is unthinkable.

Suddenly sleeping in begins to seem childish. To be successful, you believe you need to rise bright and early to be productive. You can’t miss your 8:00AM classes if you want good grades. You now only have quality time for your bed on weekends, when you get in late and wake up even later. It starts getting awkward because you’re bed starts asking questions like, “Why you coming home so late?”

You try to hide your affair with studying from your bed, but by the time exams roll around, you’re even studying in your bed. It’s a sticky situation and 99.9% of college students claim that they’ve found themselves in this situation at least once by the end of freshman year.

My advice is just be fair to both. Have time for both your spouse and your lover; balance it out to be successful in college!
