Fall Fashion for the Fair Fledgling

By Lacey Ross on October 30, 2012

Fall is my favorite season of the entire year. This seems to be a rather popular season in Columbus this year, as the summer was abnormally sweltering and had students of OSU begging for the chilly winds of autumn. Most of my favorite clothing is not summer appropriate, so I long for fall throughout the entire summer break each year. I unfortunately inherited a low tolerance for heat from my father; however, I continue to astound people by wearing shorts and skirts until the first snow falls.

I do most of my clothes shopping in the fall as well, because I live in the “too heavy for summer, too light for winter” types of clothing. Cardigans, blazers, and denim overshirts invade my daily wardrobe as I hold off on wearing my winter coat as long as possible. And yet, most of the time, I still manage to look halfway decent. That being said, I have some advice/tips for relishing the fall and savoring the cool weather before December rears its frosty head.

Lana Del Ray, currently modeling for my favorite store, H&M

1: What I do at the beginning of every season is choose a few fashion inspirations from the celebrity world or the modeling world, and pick out a few brands that I like so I can emulate them with more affordable items. Quirky fashion sense has become wildly popular in the past few years, with Hollywood women such as (my selections) Zooey Deschanel and Emma Stone spearheading the movement.  However, the music world houses many more daring women these days, and my second autumn inspiration comes directly from the woman herself, Lana Del Rey. Both of these gorgeous women embrace a union of simplicity and soft glamour, while paying homage to past fashion and eccentricity. Vintage is in, ladies! My favorite brand at the moment is the United Colors of Benetton and has been for some time. As you can probably guess, the actual brand is a bit out of my price range, so I simply use the online campaign as a guideline.

From Benetton’s latest! Notice the buttoned-up shirt all the way to the collar, the cardigan, and the bright colors!

2: I usually do not agree with fashion magazines or programs when they choose the “color of the season” because it is usually something no normal girl has a lot of, like ochre or lavender. I believe in wearing all colors, all year around! In the fall, when people begin to bundle up in dark colored hoodies and jeans, pull out your favorite pastels or bright primaries and make people look twice!

2.5: Nude is my new obsession. No, not being nude, the “color” nude. Nude, in case you are unfamiliar, is that lacquered shade of tan most commonly seen in shoes and other accessories, but that is slowly making its way into mainstream fashion. I find nude akin to black in the way it complements anyone’s skin tone and is striking. I have just recently moved into the world of nude nail polish (OPI brand, as you can never go wrong with that), and for a girl who hates painting her nails and refuses to get acrylics, that is a big deal.

3: One word: collars. Beaded collars, tight collars, v-neck collars, popped collars, and “Peter Pan” collars are my personal favorites. Collars have not been so important in fashion since the Elizabethan era, it seems, as hipsters and girly-girls alike have begun to don the styles of their youth once again. And I love it! I have seen an increasing number of girls this season buttoning their shirts up all the way, creating a youthful and prim look. I myself do this with nearly all of my button-up shirts, as it looks extremely cute with a high-waisted skirt/shorts. For an added touch, I throw on my short pearl necklace and fold my collar over the necklace.

I simply adore this collar! What a statement piece

4: It is easy for me to add this to the list because it comes naturally to me, but big hair works so well in the autumn. My long, poofy locks get in the way during the summer, and often freeze in the winter as they hold in so much moisture from the air. During the fall, however, the wind acts as nature’s blowdryer and gives my hair an extra tousle. Plus, the absence of humidity allows my hair to keep its shape all day! It is a well-known fact that every girl can have big hair if they are willing to put in the work. Even the straightest hair can be braided to create voluminous waves or teased to give the illusion of layers upon layers! If you ever get discouraged in your journey to big hair, remember: Taylor Swift does not wake up in the morning with that hair. She has stylists, we don’t.

This is me…and my hair

5: Finally, two of my favorite accessories in the fall are my umbrella and my rainboots. These two additions to your fall fashion wardrobe will separate you from the average more than anything else! Anyone can purchase a small solid retractable Totes umbrella, but are you daring enough to carry a large rainbow floral umbrella with a hooked wooden handle? Are you confident enough to pull off a pair of yellow and white polka-dotted rainboots? If you are, you are in for a treat. The world of rain attire is filled to the brim with things “too loud” or “too obnoxious” for the ordinary shopper, but these bright plastic and rubber accessories will make you the envy of the rainy month of October. You will be the ray of sunshine through the dreary clouds as you show your classmates that no weather can stop your personality!

Looks like a perfect combination!
