The Tricks and Treats of the "Pretty Little Liars" Special Halloween Episode

By Abby Kutscher on October 24, 2012

Well Pretty Little Liars fans, have you recovered from Tuesday’s special Halloween episode yet? The Ghost Train certainly took us on one wild ride! So let’s recap and discuss where this could possibly all be leading to when the show returns on January 8th. (Spoiler alert!)

A lot happened in Tuesday’s special episode, so we will take it one character at a time. First up is Mona. The first scene showed her handing off some pill capsules to the infamous black-hooded character. Was it Toby? The answer remains unclear. After all, we know that there are multiple characters involved with the A-team. We do know, however, that Mona was on the train disguised in the same costume as Caleb. Hannah unmasked her, only to reveal another mask underneath—a mask that was shown laying under Mona’s bed at the end of the episode.

Another member of the A-team who was present on board was the character in the jester costume. This was probably the same hooded character in scene one who drugged Aria by spiking her drink, presumably with the capsules provided by Mona earlier. Was it Toby? Or was it a girl? After choking Spencer, the masked villain left behind an acrylic red fingernail. This seems to lend evidence to the fact that the jester was in fact a girl. However, Spencer and Hannah both notice that the fingernail is quite larger than an average girl’s. So maybe it was Toby after all. But then again, do we honestly believe that he would want to hurt Spencer? Thanks to last season’s finale, we know that he is a member of the A-team, but he also seems to genuinely care about his girlfriend.

Then, there was the creepy white-faced character. This character was seen both at the station and then again in the background of the dancing crowd. The girls noticed him/her at the station but concluded that it was just a costume and that it didn’t necessarily mean anything. When Spencer was walking down the hall, we heard the song that Mona had been singing in the opening scene. And then, the white-faced character appeared. So we may have been led to believe that Mona was the white-faced character. However, it was revealed to be Garret. So was there more than one person in that white-faced costume on the train? Or was it Garret the whole time? Could it be that he was just keeping an eye on the girls in order to discover the opportune moment to talk to Spencer?

Other questions were raised in this episode as well. What about the little girl that Hannah’s mom saw? Was she really a ghost? A possible foreshadowing? Was Garret telling the truth about Aria’s dad being with Ali on the night she died? What would he want with her? And what about the hand emerging from the dirt at the end? It was clearly meant to be Ali’s, but what was that all about? When Toby pushed Noel into the ice chest, was it on purpose? Had they staged it so that the body of Ali would be revealed? Is Ali’s body really in that body bag?

Clearly, the episode was full of tricks and treats. Sadly, we don’t quite know how to decipher them yet. Hopefully the answers to these questions will become clearer in the next season, which premiers on Tuesday, January 8th at 8:00pm on the ABC Family channel.
