John Farrell Announced As Red Sox 2013 Manager

By Alex Carr on October 25, 2012

Red Sox fans around New England can sleep a little bit more peacefully knowing that our team will be in good hands next year as the Sox have signed their top choice to be the next manager of this historic franchise. Farrell, the former Sox pitching coach and Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays for the last two seasons, was the Sox’ top choice to replace Bobby Valentine going into their managerial search. Though he was still under contract for one more year with the Blue Jays, the Red Sox were able to acquire Farrell by compensating the Jays with infielder Mike Aviles, and Farrell had made it clear to the Toronto management that he would prefer to be in Boston. While working with the Toronto Blue Jays, who have not sold out a game in several years, Farrell was just 154-170 as manager in the last two seasons with two fourth place finishes in the AL East.

It seems very clear that both parties are happy with this offseason’s proceedings and are looking forward to turning the Red Sox around next year after what was a miserable 2012 season. In a statement released by the Red Sox, Farrell expresses his happiness to be returning to the sports-crazed city of Boston, “I love this organization. It’s a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us.” He is returning to an organization where he is very well known and loved by the players, and on top of that, he is familiar with the system and the organization. All in all it seems that the Red Sox scored big, signing Farrell to a three year deal. It would be hard to find a better candidate for the job.

That job, however, will be far from easy for the first-time manager as he tries to right the ship in Boston after one of the most embarrassing seasons in franchise history. And as much as the fans and management would like to blame the whole collapse on 2012 manager, Bobby Valentine, the truth is that a lot of the blame has to be placed on the players as well. The whole attitude in the clubhouse needs to be changed, away from superstars focusing on stats and back to the team focused on winning baseball games, like they were in 2004 and 2007. Farrell was a part of both of those World Series wins, and has goals of getting the Red Sox back there.
